Sealants

Sealants are used to eliminate or noticeably reduce permeability of sprayed coatings to liquids and gases. They are applied in a form of water-borne or organic-borne liquids over the surface of as-sprayed or ground coatings. When liquid, a sealant material penetrates into the coating surface pores, sealing them and adhering well to the coating surface. Some sealants require baking.

Usually, sealants do not add to the total coating thickness.

Sealants are used for permanent service (functional) or temporary protection of sprayed coatings (storage, in-service heat treatment, etc.). Functional sealants prolong life of the main coating layer even when their surface is damaged since they remain in the coating pores.
